Meet Zayna

"Acknowledging Black culture in today's fashion industry means celebrating our heritage, advocating for representation both in front of and behind the camera, and creating opportunities for Black creatives to thrive."Zayna Gilgeous

At just 19 years old, Zayna Gilgeous, a talented designer and freshman at Drexel University, is already making her mark in the fashion world while envisioning ways to uplift others in the future. Her ultimate goal is to establish a creative arts school for young Black creatives in her hometown.

"I want to build a fashion brand that creates opportunities for young Black creatives and open a creative arts school in the community where I grew up. Talented young people deserve a space to develop and refine their skills," Zayna shared.

In the short term, Zayna is determined to learn directly from Black designers and business owners through internships and mentorships. With her unwavering passion and drive, we have no doubt that Zayna will achieve everything she sets out to do.

During our Summer 2024 cohort, we were honored to welcome Zayna into Hems & Brims. When asked why she joined the program, she explained: "I joined because of Hems & Brims’ emphasis on uplifting and educating young Black designers like myself."

Her Journey and Inspiration

Zayna attributes her strong work ethic and determination to her mother, who has been her biggest inspiration and steadfast supporter. From encouraging Zayna to excel in school to ensuring she had the tools to pursue her creative dreams, her mother’s influence has been instrumental in shaping her journey.

"She’s always pushed me to be the best I could be, ensuring I had the tools I needed to pursue my goals, and I am eternally grateful for her positive influence in my life," Zayna shared.

Experience With Hems & Brims

Zayna’s time in Hems & Brims transformed how she views the fashion industry. Initially believing that formal education was the only way to break into the field, she discovered that “the fashion industry is not a linear entry process.”

Throughout the program, Zayna participated in weekly 1:1 mentorship sessions with Tieisha Mitchell. With Tieisha’s guidance, Zayna polished her portfolio, learned to navigate platforms like LinkedIn, and gained practical skills that she implemented immediately.

"My experience with my mentor, Tieisha, was a highlight—specifically when I learned the elevator pitch method. I implemented my pitch soon after and secured an opportunity involving costume design," Zayna said.

These experiences not only enhanced Zayna’s confidence but also inspired her to pursue more ambitious projects. "I’ve learned the importance of networking and plan to use those skills to put together an upcoming collection, photoshoot, and fashion show," she added.

Staying Motivated

When asked what keeps her focused on her goals, Zayna shared:

"No matter how ambitious, knowing that my goals are possible is what keeps me going. I want to inspire fellow and future designers to pursue their dreams in fashion and other creative or business pursuits."
