Hems & Brims is dedicated to empowering the next generation of Black fashion creatives by offering resources, connections, and support.

Schedule

Registration closes: May 20, 2024 at 5 PM EST

Acceptances announced: Starting May 27, 2024

Program Dates: July 11 - Sept 1, 2024

Students may choose to attend the morning or afternoon group session.

While we'll schedule sessions based on availability, we'll strive to accommodate your preferences as best as we can.

Morning Session: 9 AM - 11 AM EST

Afternoon Session: 12 PM - 2 PM EST

1 on 1 Session

Meet with your mentor individually before the group sessions so they can help you meet your future goals in fashion.

Mentees will meet with mentors for one hour per week, on a day mutually agreed upon between Monday and Thursday. Once scheduled, these 1:1 sessions will occur consistently at the same time and day of the week throughout the duration of the program.

Group Session

Meet with your like-minded peers and learn about our available topics.

Friday: Basics of Sewing (2 hours)

Saturday: Business of Fashion or Sustainable Fashion (2 hours)

Sunday: Black Representation in Fashion or Fashion Culture & Identity. (2 hours)

*The Basics of Sewing course is now optional. It is recommended for students who have no sewing experience at all or for those who desire a refresher on the fundamentals of sewing*

H&B GROUPS

Basics of Sewing: Master essential sewing skills, including proficient usage of sewing machines, hand-sewing techniques, and understanding and utilizing patterns effectively.

Business of Fashion: Explore roles within the fashion industry beyond design. Discover pathways to enter the industry, emphasizing personal branding for differentiation.

Sustainable Fashion: Explore the significance of sustainable fashion, understanding its environmental impact. Gain insights into maintaining sustainability in future fashion brands.

Black Representation in Fashion: Addressing Black representation in fashion and discuss strategies for fostering inclusivity. Recognize influential Black figures shaping the fashion landscape.

Fashion, Culture & Identity: Discuss the intersection of Black culture and fashion, exploring how fashion serves as a medium for cultural expression and identity.

Why Join?

  • Students will be given the opportunity to shadow their mentors if they reside in the same state.

  • Students who participate in the Basics of Sewing group session will receive a sewing machine, sewing kit and fabric. However, sewing machines will be provided only to students who do not already own one.

  • Students who participate in the Basics of Sewing group session will learn how to sew by hand and learn how to use a sewing machine. 

  • Students will build lasting connections with fashion industry professionals.

  • Students will be able to learn from Black creatives in the fashion industry.

  • Students will receive letters of recommendation if requested.

  • Students who reside in New York will be offered internship/volunteer opportunities.
